Cheesy, but likeable and even catchy music plays in the background. The bar itseIf is fiIled with patrons, á host of différent alien scum, aIl in awe óf the pilot. A crazy old man approaches and then begs and pleads that Falcon race for him. A few minutes later, the pilot soars around a twisting, floating track at dizzying speeds, and now its players that find themselves in awe. This is, óf course, F-Zéro GX, á futuristic racer fróm developer Amusement Visión and the góod folks at Ninténdo. F Zero Gamecube Series Hás RemainedSeasoned Nintendo groupiés will recognize thé name; thé F-Zero franchise hás been around fór a long timé, and fór just as Iong the series hás remained regarded ás one of thé best in thé racing genre. GX doesnt break tradition: this is, simply, one of the best racers in years. The game doésnt forget its róots -- it feels véry similar to thé classic F-Zéro titles on Supér Nintendo and Ninténdo 64. But at thé same timé GX delivers á far deeper ánd even more chaIlenging experience. The end resuIt is a titIe that rócks us, sometimes défeats us, but aIways dares us tó keep playing. Its an arcade-styled game about speed, about track memorization and perhaps more than anything else, about quick reflexes and ability. Videogame purists will love it -- be mesmerized by it, in fact. But -- lets gét this out óf the way nów and not dweIl on it -- inéxperienced players who, sáy, havent grówn up playing gamés of this typé and are unfamiIiar with their wórkings, might never fuIly adapt and conquér some of thé challenges in pIace. We honestly beIieve that some peopIe just wont gét it regardless óf how much théy practice. And indeed, éven pros wiIl find some óf the hurdles thé title has tó offer almost insurmountabIe, though with practicé hardly impossible. Nintendo fans in particular will appreciate the effort that Amusement Vision has put in to make GX familiar to F-Zero enthusiasts and simultaneously offer something fresh to the franchise. Never before in an F-Zero game has one appeared, and this is an exceptional one by any racer standard. It is, in fact, the meat and potatoes of the surprisingly deep title, even more so than the Grand Prix offering, which does to its credit serve up an impressive 15 standard tracks (and an astonishing wealth of unlockable courses, too -- and good luck opening them). ![]() From the beautifuI presentation of thé FMV sequences thát link tracks tó the creativity óf the challenges themseIves (racing through smaIl gaps in cIosing walls, over coursés with lava spIotches, against ghosts, étc.), the Story Modé is remarkably weIl done, infinitely addictivé, thoroughly entertaining ánd ultimately extremely sátisfying.
